Hello my Pretties and welcome back to the Facial Bungalow’s Tour de Skincare!
With the winter months cozily upon us, there’s no better time to take a little trip to Hydration Lane. Today, we’ll have a little chat about moisturizers. So grab a cup of hot cocoa, and let’s get down to the business of helping you create plump, glowing, healthy skin!
What are moisturizers good for?… wait for it… adding moisture to the skin! OK, so maybe not the most earth-shattering news you’ve ever heard, but let’s take a deeper look: They also protect the skin’s barrier, nourish it, balance its oil/water content, and can treat various conditions to boot. Moisturizers, especially for us Angelenos, are like manna from heaven! Our desert climate, coupled with spending time in air conditioned cars and homes, can leave skin parched and looking all-around dull. Lack of moisture in the skin can also contribute to the appearance of the dreaded “f and w’s”: FINE LINES and WRINKLES. Eek!!!
If you’re saying, “but I have oily skin; this doesn’t apply to me”—think again my gorgeous friend! Though oily skin is oil-rich, it can still suffer from dehydration; that is, lack of water. Much like an overly bedazzled holiday sweater, dehydrated skin looks cute on no one. Also when oily skin is dehydrated it can over compensate for it’s lack of water by producing MORE oil. In other words you end up with skin as shiny as the above mentioned holiday sweater. Though it can seem counter-intuitive moisturizer can be oily skins new BFF.
Moisturizer formulations are endless, but here’s a CliffsNotes guide to them:
Depending on type, moisturizers brim with many kinds of active ingredients, like for instance antioxidants and peptides. Some are oil-based for dryer and mature skins; others are water-based for oilier/combination skin. Both types contain oil and water, but if the product is called water-based, it has a higher concentration of water to oil. There are oil free varieties as well. Most moisturizers contain humectants that help draw water to the skin, keeping it plump and well hydrated.
Now that you have this wealth of moisturizer knowledge, I’m sure you’re ready to hit up your favorite spot for skincare products and get yourself a jar of hydrating goodness! Not all moisturizers, however, are created equal. Many department and drug store brands are full of icky fillers that do more harm than good. These fillers can lead to irritated skin and clogged pores, bringing you back to square one.
Look for moisturizers from companies that produce in smaller batches, like formulations made by your esthetician or dermatologist. Smaller batches mean unwanted cheap, clogging ingredients, which equals less risk of irritation and breakouts.
With all of our research over the years we have developed “our favorite” moisturizer. At the Facial Bungalow’s TRS Quench Moisturizer comes to the rescue—This amazing formula is non-irritating, calming, hydrating, and won’t clog pores! It’s packed with antioxidants, soothing aloe, and a pinch of retinol for good measure. The cherry on top is that this moisturizer also plays well with all skin types.
Just a little side note… Like any good superhero, sometimes a moisturizer needs a sidekick! Oil- and water-based serums are the Robin to a good moisturizer’s Batman. Our own TRS oil-based caped crusader goes by the name of Bye Bye Dry. This pure squalane serum is derived from olives and mimics the skin’s natural oil. It gives an extra hydrating boost to drier skins. Moisture Boost our hyuralonic acid-containing, water-loving hero can attract 1,000 times its weight in water in a single drop! And just because we like to show off, we added red tea for added antioxidants. What you’re left with from these potions is hydrated, nourished skin.
With well hydrated skin it will be a Happy New Year indeed!
