The start of a new semester means settling into a fresh environment. Sounds promising, right? Totally, but you’ll also be privy to late nights, a wacky sleep schedule, and a super busy social calendar. And if you’re not careful, that can mean mayhem for your skin.
While you’re hanging out with friends, attending class, and doing homework, you may also be subconsciously forming habits that can wreak havoc on your face. The best way to avoid these sneaky breakout causes is to identify them before they get out of hand. Once you’re aware of the triggers, you’ll be less likely to commit these complexion crimes! We had Washington D.C.-based dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi break down the biggest sources of acne when you’re away at school, so grab your number two pencil because you just might want to write this skin-saving info down.
1. Slacking on Skincare
Don’t let yourself become one makeup wipe away from a zit. Not washing your face can be a slippery slope! “Acne is often related to retained makeup,” says Dr. Tanzi. “Make sure you wash your face well before bed to remove makeup completely, and avoid using no-rinse products.”
2. Sleeping Sans Air Conditioning
A hot dorm is more than uncomfortable: It can also be bad for your skin. “Keep your room cool when you’re going to bed to reduce sweating and the resulting clogged pores.”
3. Touching Your Face
Resting your head in your hand while listening to a lecture or having your phone glued to your ear are big causes of breakouts. “The issue is not so much bacteria, but the pressure and friction that is put on the skin. The most important reason to keep your hands off your face is not because they’re dirty, but because the constant pressure clogs pores and irritates the skin.”
4. Not Cleaning Your Brushes
This is a big one, so don’t forget! “Oils can accumulate on makeup brushes and can cause a breakouts in women who are acne-prone, so remember to wash them at least once a month.” Pro tip: Set a calendar reminder if you have to.
